Nurses¡¯s Experiences of Verbal Abuse in Hospital Setting

Abstract

|
Purpose: The purpose of this study was aimed to investigate the experience of verbal abuse among nurses
who work in hospital setting.
Method: Data were collected from 417 nurses from two general hospitals with over 300 beds in G City using a self-reporting questionnaire from 17th to 24th August 2009.
Results: The verbal abuses were analyzed in terms of experience (7), cause (11), contents (11), response (19)
and coping (17). Most (95.9%) of the respondents reported experiencing verbal abuse. The abuses were done most frequently by patients and their families. It happened most frequently during the weekday daytime. The 63.5% of the subjects thought about resignation. The contents of verbal abuse were speak impolitely. The cause of verbal abuse was the venting of anger to nurses. The highest emotional response was angered (4.48).
Conclusion: Nurses need to be better protected from verbal abuse during the performance of their job. Educational programs and training should be developed to provide nurses with strategies in rationally coping with verbal abuse.
